Hospital Bag Checklist for Indian Moms

Hospital Bag Checklist for Indian Moms

Most hospitals provide less than parents expect. Pack by week 35, and pack around the assumption that you'll need to bring almost everything yourself.

For Baby

Hospitals rarely stock newborn diapers, so bring 20–25 — the quantities below make this the one section worth a proper checklist. Alongside them, pack a single pack of alcohol-free wet wipes for gentle cleaning from day one, four or five soft muslin cloths for swaddling, burping and wiping, and three or four newborn onesies (front-open styles are easiest). Add two sets of a baby cap and socks, since newborns lose heat fast, and one mild baby wash for the first bath.

Baby Item Why Quantity

👶 Newborn Onesies Front-open onesies are the easiest to dress newborns. 3–4
🧢 Baby Cap & Socks Newborns lose body heat quickly. 2 Sets

For Mom

Pack two or three front-open nightgowns for easy nursing access, and two packs of maternity pads — postpartum bleeding is heavier than a period and lasts several days. Bring two nursing bras for comfort, a basic set of toiletries (shampoo, soap, face wash), a few snacks since labour can run 12 hours or more, and a pair of warm socks and slippers, because wards tend to run cold.

For Partner

The partner's bag is small but easy to forget. Pack two changes of clothes, since stays often run longer than planned, and a phone charger — the single most commonly forgotten item. Add snacks and water, because supporting labour is tiring too, and a camera or fully charged phone for those first few minutes.

Documents

Carry government ID for both parents, the hospital registration papers, and your insurance documents — including pre-authorization if that applies to your plan. If you've written a birth plan, bring it, and save your doctor's contact number offline as well as in your phone.

Packing Tips

Use two bags rather than one, so your partner isn't digging through your things to find a onesie. Wash all baby clothes before packing to remove manufacturing residue before it touches newborn skin. Keep the finished bag by the door so there's zero lost time when labour starts. And pack lighter than instinct suggests — most parents overpack for the baby and underpack for themselves.

KiddySoft is there from the first change — Newborn (0–3 kg) diaper pants and alcohol-free wet wipes, ready for the ride home.
